The idea for this site began on a hot summer day in August, 2003. The lights in my office went out. The entire place was dark. I looked out the window to the other side of 49th street and saw dark windows there too, and people looking around. Fear immediately gripped me. It was just under 2 years since 9/11 had happened in New York. Was it happening again? What was going on?
Every office, store and business evacuated. The streets were packed with people trying to figure out how to get home. I had no idea what was going on. No source for news. Smart phones lay in the future in 2003. I had no water. I had no food. I had to cross the Hudson River and figure out how to make the 15 miles to home in 90ยบ heat. I swore that I would never be caught in a situation like that again. I'd survived 9/11 and the Northeast Blackout of 2003.
When I returned to work 4 days later, I was carrying with me a backpack containing everything that I could possibly need in any future disaster. And that's when the idea for Survival Kit Market was born.
